CATHY MUHLING & NANOU DUPUIS A THIRD SPACE Catalogue
A Third Space is an exhibition by Cathy Muhling and Nanou Dupuis. It reflects on the artists conversing side by side but remaining true to their processes – exploring paint through layering and dissolving of paint Dupuis challenges the perception of what is expected from a painting. The artistic process requests curiosity from the viewer to seek what is seen in each artwork. By sculpting and transforming the materials it creates a buildup of depth and perspective. Dupuis artistic intention and minimal palette is to expand the perception of painting beyond the limit of a flat surface. Muhling explores the domain of feeling, memories and change through the function of dissolution, by building up layers of oil paint and then rubbing back revealing the past and then reapplying over time. This series of work reflects on the fragile and evanescent qualities that are observed in the world. Distillation of the image is abstracted over time and the buildup of paint creates its own atmosphere. Through the use of paint this body of work from both artists outstretches as a space within a space within a space…..to a third space.
