In this exhibition, I am particularly interested in how the placement of artworks within a space influences the way one can engage and relate to them. This interplay between the artwork and its environment may encourage reflection on nature, culture the human condition, and existence. I aim to engage viewers’ senses, particularly the tactile sensation of touch and the olfactory experience provided by the bay leaves- raw and natural. The bay leaf, known as “foglia d’alloro” in Italian, holds a connection to my Italian cultural heritage. The process of creating texture and surface allows me to infuse my essence into the work, making it a form of self-portraiture. The surfaces and forms evoke undulating shapes, embodying a human essence embedded within the layers of the work. My two-dimensional abstract artworks can be perceived as minute architectural artifacts that enhance a space. The positioning of the artwork determines how the onlooker approaches and interacts with it, creating a dynamic and immersive experience. The process of making for me is experienced through the senses, which act as conduits between the body and the mediums I create with. This sensory experience is integrated into the artwork, transforming it into enduring energy that I hope viewers will also experience. This concept aligns with Merleau-Ponty’s analogy of ‘embodied perception’, much like how art can serve as a medium for physical and existential exploration. Through this multifaceted approach, my artwork seeks to engage viewers in a sensory experience that transcends physical boundaries, inviting contemplation on the human existence.
