SEAN HOGAN NEVERMORE Catalogue

Nevermore continues my exploration of system theory and complexity science, which underpin the concepts of my artistic practice. By employing system-based processes and self-imposed structured sets of rules that utilise formal aesthetics such as geometry, colour theory, proportion, and materiality, these works interrogate the dualities of complexity/ simplicity, predictability/ unpredictability, order/ disorder and disconnection/ connection. Working in groupings or series the systems reveal themselves where, like the murmuration of starlings, similarity and difference are exploited by a few simple rules. This approach is not merely the result of deterministic conclusions but rather a showcase of diversity and variation. By enacting the same process for each new series, humanness is translated in the act of repetition: a place where the shifting of time, space, emotion, mood and skill, produce alternate effects within confined parameters. To accompany the visual works, musician The Artificial Limb has composed a soundscape responding to these themes and processes. Produced from field recordings captured during the artwork’s creation and taking cues from sounds such as basso profundo, listened to during the shows conceptualisation and realisation, the result is a symbiotic aural/ visual environment that adds further clues to the reading of the exhibition.
