Franky Howell’s latest body of works, Formline build on his bold visual language explored in ‘Chromakrill’ at Five Walls Project space 2023.

The works consist of a range of large, wooden multipaneled pieces, with the remnants of these becoming the starting point of the sculptural pieces, the works on paper creating a pathway between the two.

Dramatic shapes and high energy-hard-edge lines create a dynamic tension where colour and form collide. The interplay between tight linear control and disrupted form also suggests an ambiguous play of elements that is now central to Howell’s current practice.

Howell makes deliberately awkward and sometimes uncomfortable compositions to challenge the viewer’s expectation of any harmonious use of colourful abstraction. The works impose a difficult but exhilarating punch of shape, line, form and colour in the most confounding ways.
