Invocations
August 8th – 30th, 2025
Invocations explores the role abstraction plays in our understanding and portrayal of, the human condition. It examines the way memory manifests within the body seeking to acknowledge the body’s immense capacity to store and contain those memories. Initially prompted by personal narratives the works are wholly concerned with the painting process, the physicality of that process, and how abstraction can be used to interpet our subjective experiences. With no preconceived outcomes each painting, rather than portraying a specific moment or event, is an invocation; a search for clarity through mark making. As layers are applied, removed, rubbed back or erased, spontaneity and moments of chance have been embraced and the medium has directed the final composition. The works are intimate in scale, encouraging sustained looking and creating an environment in which the viewer can pause, and contemplate, that which exists beyond the physical properties of paint. A collection of loaded marks and gestures, this exhibition is an exploration of paints affective dimensions; a perception of the body’s ability to imbue our lived experience; and an offering to the viewer, for a moment of reprieve.
