Take the Stairs to the Inside Out
September 19th – October 11th, 2025
I began sculpting with steel when studying at the VCA. It reminded me of when I used to sew; you cut out your materials and tacked them together, which quickly gave a sense of how a garment would look, then add and subtract to allow the design to evolve. Similarly, my process for creating art is to use cut forms, tack them together, intuitively adding, removing, tweaking, until I strike the right balance within a composition. Working like this can be messy and chaotic, but it’s full of ideas, which eventually form themselves into a body of work. I look for, feel, and intuit a sense of harmony and simplicity that creates the basis of a thematic collection. Avoiding waste is part of my process; the smaller sculptures include shapes that became the negative spaces cut from the larger works. All sculptures are powder-coated, suitable for display inside and out. The white-on-white / black-on-black promotes the play of light and shadow to emphasise the balance and simplicity of the geometric planes. The work playfully engages with architectural and geometric space and reflects my interest in modern abstraction. Tracey Lamb
