Paul van Katwijk – ‘On Return’
Cracked mangled glass windows on an old industrial factory. Quick fluorescent spray marks on the pavement. Neon screaming signage. Layers of accumulated grime. Disjointed brickwork made to half fit.
Taking note of often human made traces, van Katwijk gathers his impressions and instills them in the formation of abstract paintings. These sources are investigated through a trial, error and play with traditional painting materials and colloquial everyday products such as house paints and masking tape. Brewing away, certain elements are honed in on or tweaked, the result being a condensed image of van Katwijk’s own abstract language and his interpretation of the world around him.
