Ung Drill

Ung Drill is a body of work that brings to the fore elements that have traditionally composed the backgrounds of my paintings – colour-field, stripe, texture. Here I have taken the opportunity to revisit the interplay of colour theory along with the use of new materials and mediums.

The abstract, colour-field paintings sit within ornate, mock-baroque, ready-to-hang frames by Ikea. The series takes its name from these frames: ‘Ung Drill’. The use of these mass-produced frames speaks to my fascination with popular culture and the disposable aesthetic. Used as found objects, they are imported from the commercial world as realia, rather than depicted in oil paint as a motif. As such, this body of work stands as a reversal of my previous practice.
