Although visually disparate, the imagery of Tim Johnson and David Sequeira reveals their shared interests in the relationship between art and the cosmos. Fusing their distinctive iconographies, their new suite of collaborative paintings, Multiple Truths points towards an interconnectedness of everything and everyone. Often floating amidst a coloured haze, Johnson’s references to Buddhism, blues music and popular culture suggest an ethereal coexistence of a range of histories, philosophies and truths, in an eternal dialogue. Sequeira’s intensely coloured diagrammatic medallions are grounded in the idea of geometry as a metaphor for universal order. His inexhaustible combinations of ellipse and line, colour and tone articulate a fascination with notions of endlessness and continuity. This blending of Sequeira’s structured geometry and Johnson’s loose nebulous scenery points to a mutual curiosity about the relationship between earth and heaven. More specifically, Multiple Truths proposes a simultaneity of the celestial and the terrestrial.
Johnson and Sequeira collaborate by drawing and painting on panels and sending them to each other between Naarm Melbourne (Sequeira) and Warrane Sydney (Johnson) via Australia Post. Preferring an absence of words, Johnson and Sequeira do not talk to each other about the ‘content’ of their respective contributions to the work. In this light, Multiple Truths emerges from the artists’ deep knowing that somehow, by means of an aesthetic of intent, it will all work out.
