Mairin Briody
You and Me and the Painting
March 15th – April 1st, 2023
Mairin Briody is influenced by the history and potential of painting as a vast idiomatic practice. Through her painting projects, Briody engages with the potential for painting to gain agency, in doing so her work moves into realms of the performative or experiential. In Briody’s work, the painting is alive. It reforms and reconfigures, it resists being fixed. Through each iteration it accumulates experience and stores memory. The painting is imbued with a vital, yet fugitive presence.
You and Me and the Painting is a collaboration between the painting and the artist, each utilising the innate properties of the other; the artist uses and reuses the material of the painting and the painting uses the continuing lived experience of the artist’s body. It is an improvised interaction, alternating the lead to compose unplanned and unknown forms.
Mairin Briody is the recent recipient of the RMIT Mary Oliphant Prize for Best Graduating MFA Tutorial Presentation 2022. Briody will complete her Masters of Fine Art at RMIT in 2023 and has previously studied art theory, art curatorship and fine art practice at University of NSW and University of Sydney.
Briody lives and works with her partner and daughter on Wadawurrung Country in Ballarat, Victoria.
