Trevor Richards is recognised for a formally structured minimalist approach to making paintings and sculpture, and his practice reflects an interest in the way structures, surfaces and patterns are integral to our lived experiences. He has completed artist residencies and exhibited throughout Australia, Switzerland, France, Poland, and Germany since the late 1970’s.

More recently he has extended his practice beyond the studio, creating site-specific interventions in architectural spaces, applying hard edged colour to floors, walls, windows, and roads.

The works in this exhibition are part of an ongoing series of paintings using circular motifs, commenced in 1999, of which a sample of recent works will be shown in the Five Walls Gallery. Open to interpretation, and spatially ambiguous, this grouping allows colour to playfully react both within each individual panel and throughout the ensemble. Aerosol spray paint is applied to aluminium panels, using masking film and circular objects from the artist’s house and studio as templates to produce variations of centres and peripheries, with a specified colour palette providing an overall continuity.

His engagement with the nature of perception and the materiality of painting, documenting processes that yield both object and image invite the viewer to participate in an orchestration of colour, surface and space. He is a founding member of the international artist collective, the Australian Centre for Concrete Art.
