White Compositions

Subtle, sensitive and quiet.

White Compositions have been guided by an interest in reductive, non-objective art. The work articulates overtones of white and, therefore, requires absorption and slow engagement. The subtle layers bring forth overlapping or free-floating geometric shapes, with some embracing symmetry to suggest a geometry of the senses at its most tranquil and undisturbed. Upon close inspection, there is evidence of the artist’s hand, in the smooth brush strokes and the lines meticulously drawn with pencil, as no masking is used. The outer edge of the support often left bare and unpainted, exposes the linen and frames the relationships between the shapes within the pictorial space.

The paintings draw impetus from the work of 20th century abstract artists, beginning with the work of Kazimir Malevich, whilst Josef Albers, Agnes Martin, and Robert Ryman inform the formal characteristics of the work.
