Nancy Constandelia
Ephemerous

Artist Statement

My compositions are produced through the slow accretion of painted layers that result in gradated monochromes. Each layer represents a progression away from the flatness of the surface as well as accumulated time.

Dispensing with more traditional modes of tonal and surface variation, in which a single layer is blended, my finished, but seemingly inconclusive compositions, succeed the mere illusion of depth to embody something far more mimetic in the painting process. The careful attention to subtle nuances of colour and light, time and space, become synonymous with the painting. Single colours are stretched, dissected into tonal layers or slightly varied hues to reveal their spectral makeup, laid bare in a static picture that appears simultaneously dynamic. The thoughtful use of colour is particularly responsive to shifting light, which intensifies shadows or brightness, causing the compositions to appear ephemeral.

The concept of ephemeros the Greek derivative of the word ephemeral, meaning lasting a very short time, describes the refraction of light with the paint, and its visual presence and disappearance.
