As something of an ongoing conversation, this show brings together a selection of artists from New Zealand and Australia with others from China’s GoGo Group. Rather than any binding thesis these artists, through their various languages of abstraction, might simply be said to share tendencies towards ‘acts of reversal’. This refers to a kind of unraveling that can be material, process-procedural, historical, conceptual or otherwise. Thoughts like photography without cameras, ink painting beyond ink, acts of disappearance, painting as writing, and surface as void, are enough to remind us that an art of abstraction might still provide fresh ways of framing our worlds. Curated by Craig Easton, Acts of Reversal is the third show in the Artist as Curator Series 2019 for Five Walls.
