Scribble Me This…
10.11.21 – 27.11.21
Scribble Me This… is a series of works on paper presented as a continuum. The bite-sized chunk exhibited at Five Walls is taken from an ongoing body of work examining the national aspect of identity through drawing. Common pens and archival inks mix to form speculative images that search for clarity on a subject that spirals into complexity when probed with any depth. The doodles and scribbles that characterise this gesture meander and search for solidity as they are punctuated by masked-out forms. These interrupting ‘anti-forms’ refer to received mythologies, historical blights, and banal expressions of daily life experienced by the artist. The associations raised by these pictorially forgotten elements operate within individual images and in conversation across the in-progress character of the display. As analogy, Scribble Me This… offers a conception of complex expressions of self as a performed, iterative, and unfinishable gesture of drawing.
