Shuhei Fukuda is a Tokyo-based artist whose practice reinterprets traditional Japanese painting through the use of silver leaf and time-based processes. He received his Doctor of Fine Arts from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2025, where his research explored the unpredictable transformation of materials and the expanded relationship between artwork, environment and time.

Working with silver leaf as both medium and collaborator, Fukuda combines traditional Japanese materials and techniques with a contemporary conceptual approach that explores impermanence, transformation and the agency of natural materials. Rather than preserving a fixed image, he allows his paintings to evolve through their exposure to air, humidity and sulphur, embracing tarnishing as an essential component of the work. Time becomes materially inscribed, with each painting recording an ongoing relationship between material, environment and human intervention. His practice reflects an Eastern aesthetic sensibility in which beauty emerges through continual transformation rather than permanence.

Fukuda has exhibited throughout Japan and internationally, with solo exhibitions including Fragment of Externality (229 Gallery, Tokyo, 2024), Quiet Colors (RUE VERTE, Copenhagen, 2023), and Change / Unchanging = Universal (3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo, 2019). His work has also been presented in group exhibitions including ashes and silver leaf (Hebel_121, Basel, 2023) and Depository Archaeology (kvalitar, Prague, 2023).

In Australia, Fukuda’s work has been presented by Five Walls Gallery in the curated group exhibitions Minimal Reductive (2025) and Silver (2026), and at the Spring 1883 Art Fair (2025).
