‘The idea for the exhibition began in the mountains just outside of Shanghai. Sitting in front of a bamboo forest quietly contemplating, I felt free from worldly preoccupations; it occurred to me that this would be the content and the aspiration for this series of paintings. A painting that is a space where one can seek refuge.’
Over twenty years now Peter Summers has become known for his abstract oil paintings that are at once reductive and expressive. His subtle and arresting works on canvas demonstrate a complex, intriguing expression of Minimalism. The paintings are built up layer by layer with various colours of alternately opaque and translucent oil paint. Three years ago Peter Summers moved to Shanghai to set up a studio. This year he has participated in a group show at the Shanghai University for Science and Technology, American cultural centre. Last year he exhibited at Anfu Lu project space, Shanghai and before he left Melbourne, was part of a group show called ‘Un:sighted’ at Fortyfive downstairs gallery. Peter Summers was selected for the 2011 Yering station sculpture prize and have been awarded the Ella Donald Memorial scholarship.
