Five Walls Projects is pleased to present Peter Summers’ exhibition, ‘Here’.
The exhibition title ‘Here’ refers to Summers’ return to Melbourne after living in Shanghai.
His collection of paintings records the return to Central Victoria, seeking refuge and reconnection. Like previous instalments, the landscape becomes a starting point. It underpins the initial preliminary stages of painting, but it is not about rendering a place. It is about capturing the essence of the connection with the landscape and how it might reflect something of the artist’s temperament.
During the course of constructing a painting, the landscape is often obliterated and gives way to a painterly process with an emphasis on the affective qualities of colour, light and hue.
Over twenty years now Peter Summers has become known for his abstract oil paintings that are at once reductive and expressive. His subtle and arresting works on canvas demonstrate a complex,
intriguing expression of Minimalism. The paintings are built up layer by layer with various colours of alternately opaque and translucent oil paint. This year, Summers has participated in a group show at
Tacit Gallery titled “Chromatopia” and he has also featured in a curated show by Jeremy Gales titled ‘Group Formalism’ at the Bundoora Homestead. In 2016, Peter exhibited at Rubicon ARI.
Between 2012-2016 he lived in Shanghai and was included in a group show at the Shanghai University for Science and Technology, American Cultural Centre. During this period of time he also exhibited work at Anfu Lu project space, Shanghai and Five Walls Project Space, Melbourne. Peter Summers has been a recipient of the Ella Donald Memorial scholarship.
