Lives and works Melbourne, Aus
Lachlan Stonehouse, is an artist working across painting, drawing, and collage. In recent works and for his exhibition Grid Variations he explores innovative methods of constructing a canvas support prior to its painting. One such methods involves adhering lengths of roughly cut linen to specifically crafted wooden substrates. Once complete the painting support evokes a lattice-like effect, to which Stonehouse applies a combination of acrylic gesso and artist grade oil paint. Occasionally, deliberate incisions are made into the painted fabric, with squares selectively removed, accentuating the irregularity of the grid even further. As viewers engage with the artwork, the predominantly monochrome palette, coupled with the interplay of materials, highlights the nuances of similarities and differences within the work.
At the core of Grid Variations lie themes of recurrence, pattern-making, and controlled surface alteration. Stonehouse extends an invitation to viewers to contemplate the paradoxical transformations within his artistic process.
Lachlan Stonehouse was born in Scottsdale, Tasmania, in 1999. In 2023 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art (with Honours) from the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. Lachlan has participated in group shows at artist-run-spaces and galleries throughout Melbourne including: Caves Ari, Blindside Ari, Oigall Projects, George Paton Gallery, Centre for Contemporary Photography and Arts Projects Australia. He has also participated in group shows in Tasmania, at Sawtooth Ari and Poimena Gallery. In 2021 he received the George Paton Gallery Artist’s residency award, Melbourne University. His work is held in the collections of UMSU Melbourne University, Parkville and Melbourne University, Southbank and private collections throughout Australia. This will be Lachlan's first solo exhibition with the gallery and his first since graduation.
